Desk Lamp

I'm in the process of cataloging a number of things that I have built over the years. This is a desk lamp built from an outdoor walkway light, a piece of pipe and flanges painted black, bolts and rubber feet. I also added a light switch on the bottom of the fixture.

For the photograph, I had to light the lamp very bright to balance out the lightbulb in the middle of the frame.

Taking Care Of Antique Furniture

My Dresser, originally uploaded by nbklx17 / Sandy.

By : Ricardo d Argence

Antique furniture requires a certain amount of care and maintenance to keep it from harm and deterioration.

Knowing how to care for your antique furniture properly will protect your investment and keep your antiques looking their best for years to come. There are three aspects to properly caring for your antiques proper cleaning, proper protection, and maintaining a proper environment.

Never use chemicals to clean your antiques. They can damage the finish. Dusting should be a part of every cleaning regimen.

Furniture should be dusted frequently to avoid dust build up. Dust can be harmful to your antique furniture. Always use a soft cloth that will not harm or scratch the surface of your furniture.

Avoid the use of polishes that keep dust away some of the chemicals can cause a weakening of your antique's finish.

Proper protection includes where you put your antique. Is it in a place where people will knock into it frequently? Is it in direct sunlight? These situations put your antique at risk of damage.

Be sure to treat your antique with the appropriate wood oil to maintain its luster and keep the wood from drying out. When the wood dries, it can cause cracking or separation, as well as weaken the piece.

Putting your antique somewhere you can enjoy it as well as keep it away from high traffic areas is preferable.
One of the most important aspects of caring for your antique furniture is maintaining the right environment. The proper environment should be neither too dry nor too damp.

The first step is to make sure your furniture is not located right next to a radiator or heat source. Houses with central heating can easily become too arid. If your air is only 25-30% moisture, you're close to the moisture level of the Sahara Desert.

Didn't know that, did you? You may want to consider a humidifier. It will help you as well as your furniture.
Humidifiers can be discreetly placed in the room in a variety of ways.

A special cabinet with a screened front may work, or if you like plants, it can be placed behind several pots. The plants will appreciate the added humidity anyway. If your home is kept at approximately 70 degrees F, you will want to aim for around 50% humidity to safeguard your antique furniture.

There are several types of humidifiers on the market; you'll want to select one appropriate for the size of your room. They also come with automatic shut off controls in case you forget to refill the water basin. Some humidifiers create a light steam.

This is a sterile form of humidity, and should be easy to use. The steam is visible and this model should be easy to clean.

If you prefer a cool form of humidity, you will want to choose one that distributes the humidity by a fan. A model like this will produce a little noise from the operation of the fan motor, unlike the silent steam model. You'll need to change filters as needed.

Ultrasonic humidifiers create a fine visible mist. There will be a low noise and you may find white chalky deposits on nearby surfaces after a period of use. You must use soft or distilled water with this variety.

Using Antler Lamps For Beautiful Rustic Home Decor

By : Craig Chambers

Antler lamps are wonderful for enhancing western home decor. Much more than a lighting fixture, antler lamps bring charm to your environment. If you have a mountain cabin or western style home, the elegant character of antlers with their beautiful shapes and variations in natural color will give your home the distinctive rustic style you are hoping to create.

For decades, ranch style home owners as well as those building more sophisticated cabins have used antler lamps as beautiful rustic lighting to complete their western or southwestern home decor. Because of the natural shape of antler lamps and chandeliers there is a rustic charm inherent within the antlers that wonderfully enhances any type of rustic furniture. There is something distinctive about antler lamps that combines all the elements and gives off a sophisticated western feel in the area. Antler lamps have a quality about them that easily enhances balance and focus in any environment.

Antler lamps also accompany many other western elements in home decor. In the Northwestern states or "north woods" antlers may be attached to snow shoes and complimented with rawhide lamp shades to make beautiful wall sconces. The light wood and rawhide lacing on the snow shoe, together with the leather binding and pleasant glow of the hand stitched shade, make it a wonderful harmony. Weather you choose to adorn your antler lamp with rustic light rawhide shades or country style dark rawhide lampshades, the choice is yours and the effect will be fabulous.

Smaller antler chandeliers are made from whitetail deer antlers while large chandeliers sometimes have many tiers of huge elk antlers. Weather your area is large or small an antler chandelier will bring the spirit of the old west alive in your home.

In Jackson Hole, WY the town's square is decorated with arches made from Elk antlers. It is certainly unique, and you can create the same look with antler lamps. Small lamps are made from whitetail deer antlers while large light fixtures such as chandeliers may have tiers of elk antlers with rawhide lampshades. One of the most popular lamps is created using moose antlers, unmistakable with their great dark palms and beautiful dark rawhide lamp shades.

Throughout the year, organizations like the Boy Scouts will search for the prized sheds. If you ever find antler sheds outdoors, it is an amazing occurrence. Antler lamps enhance that same style in your home and can change your setting's ambiance in a most exciting way.

Antlers are found in different qualities that are categorized like rare coins. The best quality is awarded an "A" grade. The grading system, indirectly, has to do with the length of time the sheds lie outdoors before found. The more time they are left in the wild, the more they break down. New antler sheds are a darker brown color. Sheds that are not found quickly will start to bleach in the sun until they become a chalky white. Another factor they loose their quality is because of chew marks from small animals and stains from wet ground or moss.

There are also different ways of making the antler lamps themselves. Some lamp makers use glue to hold the antlers together. Others may fasten them together with a rawhide thong for a rustic Indian look. And some of the most attractive antler lamps may use a combination of being glued, drilled and screwed together, with the holes closed up for a natural look. High end lamps will almost always include rawhide lamp shades.

Each antler is somewhat varied than any other, so each antler lamp is a unique treasure and is great for rustic lighting. Enhance western decor in your home and compliment your rustic home furnishings with the beautiful, rustic antler lamps.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans Make Life More Comfortable

Outdoor-Ceiling-Fans, originally uploaded by Davis_Austin.

By : April Kerr

Generally speaking, we tend to associate ceiling fans with inside our homes, rather than outside in the garden. However you might not realize just how popular outdoor ceiling fans really are. There are a great deal of benefits to be had by having af ceiling fan installed as they are efficient and convenient. Ceiling fans were first of all designed to help keep factory workers cool during the industrial revolution. Not all that much has changed since then as the principal is simply to blow cool air around your home and also your garden.

Not many people hate to be outdoors. When you've just been through a long dark and cold winter, there is something so uplifting about warmer weather. So if you've spent a lot of time creating the perfect outdoor space for you and your friends to spend time in, then having a ceiling fan will allow you to enjoy it a lot more. The problem with summer is that often it can get so debilitating hot that people just want to stay indoors where it is cooler. But if you do that you won't be able to enjoy your garden and BBQ. Some people may attempt to have their air con unit switched on in the hope that some of that cold air will transfer outside. This is really not a very good idea, mainly because it isn't that successful plus you'll end up spending a fortune on energy bills. No, the best way to cool down an outdoor space is simply to have an outdoor ceiling fan installed.

Outdoor ceiling fans are much the same as the ones you have for indoor use except they are more robust. They have to be built this way because they are going to be exposed to heat, rain and wind. Another benefit of having a fan outside is that they can even put out heat which is great when it gets a bit cooler in the evenings. You can also buy them with lights so that you have some illumination at night.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals and features. Outdoor ceiling fans come in different sizes so make sure you buy one appropriate for the size of outdoor space you have. If you have a large patio then buying one of the larger fans is the best way to go. You will see that they normally come in 36, 42, 52 and 60 inches. The appearance of the fan is also a very important consideration because it will be on show so you don't want to be lumbered with something ugly. Luckily there is a surprisingly large range of fans to choose from including modern, rustic, tropical and bronze.

Decorating your walls using wall mural kits.

The Nursery, originally uploaded by julzrulz5.

By : Sonia Sood

Wall murals are an easy and inexpensive way to decorate your home. They can personalize and brighten any room, and, perhaps best of all, can be done by almost anyone. Even if you feel you have no artistic talent, you can design and paint a wall mural to be proud of and show to all your guests. Look for inspiration in your favorite books, greeting cards, or art. You can also incorporate words, like favorite quotes, into your murals.

Wall mural kits have made it even easier to create a beautiful wall mural. Wall mural kits exist for almost any type of mural, big or small. The smallest kits contain stencils for room accents, like butterflies, bugs, flowers, or stars. These kits provide an easy introduction into creating wall murals because they are small and don’t require much planning. Themed wall mural kits, each with several stencils, start at around $30. Border wall mural kits are another easy way to decorate a room. They can accent furniture or woodwork and look cute painted on children’s furniture. Most border kits cost around $5.

You can also buy large wall mural kits. These kits will help you paint a mural on one large wall. The murals are usually around eight by five feet. Children’s wall mural kits are particular popular. You can find stencils with construction equipment, cowboys, castles, dance, garden, and animal themes, for instance. Large wall mural kits cost around $30. Many of the large wall mural kits also have matching accessory kits, like a wall border or dresser knobs.

Parents wave how much their children love the murals they created using wall mural kits. Adult wall mural kits are a bit harder to find and more difficult to do, for the most part. Children’s wall murals can look like cartoons, but adult wall murals are generally subtler and take more artistic talent. You can, however, borrow aspects of children’s wall mural kits for in your own home, or use the kits to create a rustic, homey feel.
